Therapeutic Effect of Cigarettes Smoking on Alzheimer's Patients

"Nicotine improves attention in a wide variety of tasks in healthy volunteers. 2. Nicotine improves immediate and longer-term memory in healthy volunteers. 3. Nicotine improves attention in patients with probable Alzheimer's Disease," [Warburton D M, "Nicotine as a cognitive enhancer," Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, 16(2): 181-91, Mar l992].

"In humans, nicotine-induced improvement of rapid information processing is particularly well documented.... Preliminary studies have found that some aspects of the cognitive deficit in Alzheimer's disease can be attenuated by nicotine." [Levin E D, "Nicotinic systems and cognitive function," Psychopharmacology, 108(4):417-31, l992]

"Despite the absence of change in memory functioning, these results demonstrate that DAT [Alzheimer's disease] patients have significant perceptual and visual attentional deficits which are improved by nicotine administration." [Jones G M, Sahakian B J, et al, "Effects of acute subcutaneous nicotine on attention, information processing and short-term memory in Alzheimer's disease," Psychopharmacology, 108(4):485-94, l992].

Researchers have long been aware that fewer smokers get Alzheimer's diseases than non-smokers. Up to April 1992, of the 17 studies on Alzheimer's and smoking which had been published in peer-reviewed journals, 13 reported a reduced risk for smokers and only four found no difference between smokers and non-smokers. Similar findings have been published on the effect of smoking and Parkinson's disease.

In an article in The Times of London (9/7/93), Dr. James Le Fanu provided an examination of the research on smoking and its apparent protective effect for certain diseases. Dr. Le Fanu stated unequivocally: "Smokers have a 50 per cent reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's--and the more smoked the greater the protection."

So striking was the apparent protective effect of smoking on Alzheimer's that increasingly biomedical researchers are experimenting with nicotine to treat the symptoms of these dread disease in-patients who have been diagnosed as having them. Results from these experiments have all showed promise in alleviating the symptoms of these diseases with the administration of nicotine.

The mechanism by which the nicotine in tobacco works to protect smokers is that it increases the number of so-called "nicotinic" receptors in the brain, which in turn influence the production and release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Those who come down with Alzheimer's show a marked loss of "nicotinic" receptors in their brains and thus have reduced levels of acetylcholine, which is necessary for memory and other brain functions.

Research has shown that tobacco smoke (and the nicotine therein) inhibits the activity of monoamine oxidase B (MAOB). Experiments on mice which were genetically engineered to be without the gene for MAOB "were resistant to the neurodegenerative effects of MPTP, a toxin that induces a condition reminiscent of Parkinson's disease," (Dr. Jean C. Shih researcher at the University of Southern California, as reported in Reuters, 10/7/97, "Isoenzyme Inhibited by cigarette Smoke May Have Role in Aging and Neurodegeneration"). The findings of Dr. Shih and her colleagues point to a protective effect from smoking on the aging of the brain.

While the amount of the publications, pointing on the cigarette smoking positive effect on Alzheimer's Patients, has decreased recently, in proportion with the strong worldwide campaign against smokers, there are still here and there posted studies results, supporting this viewpoint.

Findings on cigarette smoking to delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease were presented in 2004 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicate that nornicotine, a by-product of nicotine, could be responsible for this protective effect. Kim Janda and Tobin Dickerson of the Scripps Research Institute tested the effect of nornicotine on amyloid beta proteins, which aggregate into the plaques that are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease.

Specifically, the researchers found that a reaction known as glycation, which occurs between the molecule and sugars, alters amyloid proteins so that fewer plaques can form. The authors note that together with nicotine, nornicotine is an intriguing and potentially valuable treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

Team of neuroscientists at the University of South Florida College of Medicine presented in 2004 another evidence of an anti-inflammatory mechanism in the brain by which nicotine may protect against nerve cell death. Their study was published in the Journal of Neurochemistry.  In laboratory experiments, the researchers demonstrated that nicotine inhibits activation of brain immune cells known as microglia. Chronic microglial activation is a sign of brain inflammation that is a key step in nerve cell death. The researchers also identified the specific site, the alpha-7 acetylcholine receptor subtype, to which nicotine binds to block microglial activation.

Nicotine mimics the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that is critical to communication between brain cells. Acetylcholine is the major neurotransmitter lost in Alzheimer's disease. The prevailing hypothesis among researchers is that nicotine helps protect the brain by binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors that sit on the end of nerve terminals. This action by nicotine, similar to turning up the volume of a radio signal, causes brain cells to increase the release of neurotransmitters depleted in diseases like Alzheimer's.

Concluding this post, I would like to admit, that there are multiple research papers, claiming that tobacco smoking can be considered as a risk factor for Alzheimer's Disease, and it affects negatively the health and well-being of the AD patients. The post does not include these studies, and they will be reviewed in one of the future articles.

The controversy is based on the complexity of the tobacco ingredients, so looking in different components might lead to the opposite results. Taking in an account the overall health danger from smoking, we do not encourage you to pick up this habit, if you never smoked before. But, it is always good to see both sides of the story…

Fake Flash Drives from eBay and how to deal with them

I like eBay, and most of my electronic "toys" and accessories are coming from this source. Where can you buy two spare batteries with charging cradle for HTC Incredible for $5 tax-free with free delivery? Only on eBay! My experience with eBay purchases was mostly positive: no delays in delivery, no scams or bad quality items. Until my recent purchase of the Sony 64G flash drive for about $20. Excellent price, free delivery. What can be better? The same day, I made a purchase, I got email from eBay with claim that the product is a scam, and they suggested submitting request to the audit department for the purchase refund, which I did immediately. In about a week, I got a full refund for the purchase, and forgot about this transaction. A month later, to my surprise, the purchased flash drive arrived. That was a clear profit. It looked normal, my computer easily recognized it as 64G. However, when I transferred the video files to the drive, I found out that the first file is working, and others not. This way, I got personally acquainted with fake USB drive.

As I got it as a freebie, I was not too concerned about the consequence, so I checked on the Internet on other users experience, and found out how big the problem is. Many bargains hunters got really slammed by these counterfeit products. And for many of them, the monetary lost was quite significant.

This post will address those who purchased a fake flash drive and wants to test it properly and fix it, if that is possible. As in my cases, even though Windows reports the listed capacity of the drive, that is not true. The drive chips are taken from rejects, or from the very low capacity, and reprogrammed to show the fake capacity of much higher than it is in reality. Many users reported that announced 32 and 64GB were, in fact, less of 1 GB of real memory due to the errors. Going forward, I can say that my "64GB" Sony drive appeared to be just 2.5 GB, which is not so bad, in comparison.

Testing USB drive

The most popular tool for testing the real capacity of the flash drive is called H2testw. It is extremely easy to use and proves detailed information. Created by Harald Bögeholz, the default language of the interface is in German but can be changed to English.

H2testw was developed to test USB sticks for various kinds of errors. It can also be used for any other storage media like memory cards, internal and external hard drives and even network volumes. To run the test for your drive, just plug in the drive, format it in Windows, run H2testw, select the target, and click Write + Verify button. H2testw writes files of up to 1GB to the chosen destination and names them 1.h2w, 2.h2w, 3.h2w and so on. If the target directory already contains such a set of files H2testw will offer to verify them. After it is done the software leaves its test files on the medium. You can erase them if you like or verify them again.

Photobucket

If the drive that you tested passes the test of H2testw without errors, then the advertised capacity is correct (minus a small overhead for operating system file formatting). However, if you are seeing a sample output like below, then it is a counterfeit. This is 4GB USB flash drive not a 64GB USB flash drive. As 4GB drive it should be about 3.9 GB not 3.8 GB formatted. This indicates in low level formatting a lot of bad sectors had to be locked out. Usually flash chips like these are rejected for major brands but somehow are being resold and reprogrammed.

The media is likely to be defective.
3.8 GByte OK (8084847 sectors)
58.6 GByte DATA LOST (122921617 sectors)
Details:710.5 KByte overwritten (1421 sectors)
7.6 MByte slightly changed (< 8 bit/sector, 15630 sectors)
58.6 byte corrupted (122904566 sectors)
710.5 KByte aliased memory (1421 sectors)
First error at offset: 0000000003cef8470
Expected: 0xeb7ac43a237c5170
Found: 0xeb7a843a237c5170
H2testw version 1.3
Writing speed: 9.24 MByte/s
Reading speed: 10.8 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4

Don't panic if H2testw detects an error on your USB flash drive. It could be other factors, so here's what you need to do. Don't use USB extension cords, make sure you insert it directly to the USB port on your computer. Try using a different USB/Firewire port especially the ones at the back of the case. Try a different cable if you are testing external hard drives. If you still get errors after following the guidelines above, then it's surely something wrong with the drive.

The executable file H2testw.exe is absolutely portable, needs no installation and can be directly run from any external storage. It was developed for Windows XP and Vista but I've tested it on Windows 7 32-bit which worked without problems.

Fixing Fake Flash Drive

When you found out that your purchase is fake, you can discard it directly to the garbage can, but you can also try to fix it by identifying of the real capacity of the drive and formatting it correctly. Note that the regular built-in formatting utility will not be much help for you at the moment, since the OS is not detecting the real drive capacity and is not able to format it properly.

There are several ways to fix the drive.

Method 1

Step 1:
Download chipgenius, this program will automatically detect an inserted flash drive and read out the 4 digit VID code and 4 digit PID code.
http://ping.fm/50VB6

Step 2:
Go to the iFlash website and search for a matching VID and PID, download the corresponding software from the site.
http://ping.fm/bgYfS
In most cases I have been able to use the software provided to reflash the controller chip and do a low level format and restore correct capacity.

This method did not work for me since chipgenius was not able to retrieve the required characteristics from my drive. Some users recommend bypass this step, open physically the flash drive and take a look on the chip. But in my case, opening the drive was impossible. So, I had to look for another method.

Method 2

The second method did not require from me identifying the technical characteristics of the device. This method may not work in all cases, but it is safer than some others, found on the web, since you do not run the risk of killing the low quality device you got.

Step 1:
Download the program cp006049 (http://ping.fm/iPw1Y) and install it.

Step 2:
Connect your drive to the computer, select it, and then choose the option "create new or replace existing configuration", and then the option "hard drive", and "create new file system".

Step 3:
After the program will finish low format of the USB drive, select the option "HP Firmware Flash package".

Step 4:
Close the program and format the flash with Windows or any other formatting utility. At the end you will find the fake USB Flash has been completely fixed to its real capacity.

There are more tools you can find online if you want to go further. I decided to stop like there.

On more word of wisdom. Even thou my drive is now at workable condition, I do not trust it much. Many users reported that several months later, the fixed drives stopped working. Rejected product is a rejected product, and you cannot fix manufacturing quality issues by any of the software tools. So, do not trust it much, placing important data there. Use it, while keeping in mind that once you may lose everything you have there.

Basics to Genealogy - Retirement Hobbies

Genealogy picked up its popularity in the World in the recent years. That became possible with the data digitalization, when you can get amazing results without leaving your armchair. Actually, genealogy is the one of the most popular (if not the most popular) hobbies in the United States. So, there is no surprise that genealogy is listed among the most popular retirement hobbies as well.

People study their family history for many different reasons.  Some wish to join patriotic organizations, which need a proven lineage.  Some do it for secular reasons.  Others - for medical reasons, trying to trace medical issues through ancestry. But most of the people start genealogy because they are just fascinated with idea to the study of their family tree.  For whatever reason, it becomes a captivating project.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Note that there is a difference between a family history and a genealogy.  A genealogy is a collection of names, dates, and places, while more extended family history may include the personal family stories that add interest to the family records. Start from the simple project, and you will find out in the process of how far and how deep you would like to go.

Every family has a history.  Genealogy explores each branch of the family tree and leaves a legacy for future generations.  No one is ever too young or old for genealogical research but beginners are often stumped how to begin.

First, gather information about the family.  Begin with immediate family members.  Vital statistics include date of birth, place of birth, parent's names and other information (age, occupation, and birthplace), occupation, marriages, divorces, education, and military service.  Move up the family tree to grandparents, great-grandparents and beyond as far as possible without additional research.

Once your knowledge has been exhausted, talk to the elders in the family.  Get names, dates, and stories.  Ask about old photographs many families have an old album or boxes of vintage photos stuck away in the attic.  If pictures are not identified, ask the oldest member of the family to help in label as many as possible.  Search for documents that provide both verification and information.  These include birth, death, and marriage certificates, naturalization and citizenship documents, military records, family Bibles, diplomas, or old newspaper clippings.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Ask where the family has lived and why they chose to dwell in that region.  If family members were immigrants ask about why they chose to emigrate and where they lived in the old country. Look for naturalization documents or citizenship papers.  If these are not in possession of a family member, check courthouse records to see if an ancestor was granted citizenship.  Find out which relatives served in the military or were involved in a war.

Many families have stories that have been handed down over many generations.  Write down the stories or record them then search for clues that prove events did happen.  Vital things to know are when, where, and who.  The more information gathered, the easier it will be to trace the family back through the generations.  If working with a common surname, it's vital to know dates of birth, place of birth, spouse, or other unique individual to sort your great-grandfather out from others of the same or similar given name.

Once a budding genealogist has interviewed elders and collected information it's time to transfer the data to a family tree.  Family's trees can be on paper, on the computer, or in a book.  Many versions are available so choose one that fits your family's needs then write in all the information.  With family tree in hand, it's time to expand the search.

Choose one surname or family line to trace at a time.  Although it can be tempting and exciting to attempt to discover information about multiple ancestors, the simple method is to focus on one group at a time.  After tracing a single family back as many generations as possible, move on to another until each branch of the family has been researched.

Genealogists who live in the same area as their ancestors can begin at the local library.  Most libraries large and small maintain important records.  Many have a separate room or area for genealogy.  Records on the local library can include everything from old newspapers (often on microfilm) to vintage books that detail area families.  City directories, taxpayer records, and even telephone directories sometimes yield a wealth of information.  Those who live far away from their ancestral homes can still make a journey to another area or combine a vacation with a fact finding research mission.

In recent years cyber space has opened new vistas for genealogy research.  There are numerous sites that offer a chance to search records to find relatives and ancestors.  Many require a paid subscription to utilize their services and fees range from modest to quite expensive.  Some of the most popular include Ancestry.com, RootsWeb, Ancestry World Tree, and Heritage Quest.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One free site provides the opportunity to search countless records is provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  FamilySearch.org is one of the best sites for family history searches.  Other no-cost options include the United States National Archives and Records Administration and the Library of Congress.  Both agencies can be accessed online.  American Memory linked through the Library of Congress is a source for photographs and many documents that can offer insight into a city or region where ancestors lived.

Other online resources include cemetery records, military records, local history, and message boards.  Genealogical message boards allow family members to post queries about ancestors and the chance to connect with other descendants of the same family.  Another option is obituary search engines that may provide information about a deceased relative.  The Social Security Death Index can provide information for American researchers as well and can be searched through several sources.

Once the quest for information about ancestors begins, genealogy can be a rewarding pastime or consuming passion.  A family tree can date back five generations or ten or twenty dependent on how much research an individual wishes to undertake.  A family tree is often treasured by all members of an extended family and provides a personal connection to the past.
