Expensology your free online personal money management assistant

EXPENSOLOGY is a FREE personal money management web application designed to help you discover where your money is going and do a little personal budget planning to help you get ahead.  Unlike other online personal finance tools, Expensology is meant to be completely manual. Expenses must be entered on a regular basis by the user in order to be effective. By entering your expenses manually, Expensology keeps the user mindful of the money he or she or the family as a whole is spending on a day-to-day basis. Other personal finance managers may download this data automatically from your bank, but Expensology is built on the idea that this manual interaction is necessary and beneficial.

Main Features

The Expense Tracker is the heart of Expensology. This is where you will enter your expenses on a daily basis -- or as often as possible. You can always of course, go back and enter past expenses. Forgot to record the money you put in your gas tank last Monday? No problem. Just choose last Mondays date when entering the expense and Expensology will put it where it belongs.

Expensologys Personal Expense Tracker can help you visualize your spending with several graphing options. When you create spending categories, you assign each of them a color that is then used in your graphs.

Entering an expense into the Personal Expense Tracker could not be easier. Simply enter the name of the spender defaults to the logged in user, the subcategory the expense belongs to, the amount and an optional description.

The Bills Manager is a simple tool to help you organize and keep track of your bills. The Bills Manager is mostly meant for bills that you pay manually. You recieve a paper bill or an email from the company, you can enter the bill name, the amount and the due date into the Manager. When you enter a bill, a reminder is automatically created for 3 days before the bill is due. That 3 day default can be modified under your user profile. You can also cancel the automatic creation of those reminders or silence them individually. In addition, you can manually create further reminders for those bills. Want to be reminded of the bill on payday? Just set a reminder.

When a bill is marked as paid, it automatically gets entered into the expense register. Modifying a Bill that you have previously created is simple. Change the name, change the date from a pop-up calendar. You can also manage the reminders for a Bill and create new ones from this screen.

The Expensology Budget Tool ties it all together. Once you have begun to track where you are spending your money in the Expense Tracker the Budget Tool will let you know how close you are to spending limits that you set on each of your major spending categories. These spending limits are set on each category on a long-term basis, but in the Budget Tool you can make adjustments that apply only to the current month.

The Budget Tool will also look ahead to bills you have added in the Bill Manager. Trying to adjust your Bills budget downward to give you more money in your Food budget? Well the Budget Tool knows that you have a $200 credit card bill due in 5 days that will bring you closer to that Bills spending limit. Guess you will have to move the money from your Entertainment budget.

The Expensology Debt Watcher allows you to keep track of your outstanding debt. Just enter the balance on the debt, the interest rate and the typical due date. Enter the amount you typically pay per month and Debt Watcher will automatically create an entry in the Bill Manager which in turn will remind you of the upcoming payment due.
Edit the balance on your debts as you make payments and the Debt Manager can keep track of your payments and graph your progress. The Debt Manager encourages "power payments" on your high interest debt and alerts you when your progress slows.

Niacinamide Vitamin B3 May Prevent Alzheimers Memory Loss

All conservative official sources claim that Alzheimers Disease is one-directional, and you cannot turn it back. While it is true as of today, and most of the efforts are placed to slow down the disease development and smooth negative symptoms effects, there is always hope that one day it will be found the distinctive cure, if not a complete cure, but any way to fight efficiently the dementia development. One of the promising directions, for example, is related to use of medical marijuana based products.

Today, we will review one more nutrient, which gives positive signals of being a remedy for Alzheimers patients. It is Nicotinamide vitamin B3, nicotinic acid, an over-the-counter vitamin.

What is Nicotinamide?

Niacin also known as vitamin B3, nicotinic acid and vitamin PP is an organic compound with the formula C5H4NCO2H and, depending on the definition used, one of the between forty to eighty essential human nutrients.

Note that in spite of the common similarity Nicotinamide is not exactly the same as Niacin. Niacin is converted to Nicotinamide in vivo, and, though the two are identical in their vitamin functions, nicotinamide does not have the same pharmacologic and toxic effects of niacin, which occur incidental to niacins conversion. And vice versa, nicotinamide has the some positive health effects, not linked with niacin.

NicotinamideNiacinamide and Alzheimers

As an Alzheimers treatment, large doses of nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, "cured" Alzheimers disease in mice, reports health researcher/reporter Dr. David Williams. Again, note: Niacinamide is NOT the same as Niacin. Do not confuse the two. "Rarely do you hear researchers using the word cured, but thats exactly what happened," says Dr. Williams. "At the end of the Alzheimers research study, the diseased mice that were treated with niacinamide performed just as well in memory tests as healthy mice. The niacinamide not only protected their brains from further memory loss, it also restored lost memory function."

The study of this treatment for Alzheimers disease, headed by Dr. Kim Green at the University of California at Irvine, involved four months of Alzheimers treatment with the human dose equivalent of 2000 to 3000 milligrams of niacinamide. "Cognitively, they were cured," said Dr. Green. "The vitamin completely prevented cognitive decline associated with the disease, bringing them back to the level theyd be at if they didnt have the pathology." Niacinamide also improved memory in mice without Alzheimers.

The late Dr. William Kaufman did extensive research on niacinamide in the 1930s. Dr. Kaufman found that niacinamide moves in and out of the body quickly, so that smaller doses throughout the day are most effective, with 250 milligrams being the most the body could utilize at one time.

Dr. Kaufman and his wife took 250 milligrams of niacinamide every three waking hours six doses for at least 55 years, believing, as a result of his studies, that it helps prevent many of the physical and mental problems associated with aging, including arthritis, fatigue, muscle strength, loss of balance, depression, and cancer.

Niacinamide has been widely used for a variety of purposes for more than 60 years, and its safety is well known, says Jonathan Wright, M.D. In one of Dr. Kaufmans books, Kaufman described symptoms of niacinamide deficiency:
  • Impaired memory, cant concentrate, easily distracted, slow thought, mental fog.
  • Anxiety for no reason, resistant to making decisions and taking responsibility, lacks initiative, starts projects but never finishes, uncooperative.
  • Quarrelsome, mean, intolerant, opinionated, unreasonable, unhappy, little things annoy, cant take a joke.
Dr. Kaufman found that these symptoms and more went away or improved a lot with the use of niacinamide, says Dr. Wright. Arthritis symptoms also improve or disappear with niacinamide, says Dr. Wright, but its not a cure; the arthritis symptoms return if patients stop taking it.

Based on Dr. Kaufmans work, Dr. Williams estimates that Alzheimers patients "would achieve the best results if they took 250 mg every 1? hours a total of 12 doses" for Alzheimers treatment. Dr. Wright recommends higher doses at less frequent intervals, which can cause side effects in a small number of people. For more info on Dr. Wrights regimen, read his newsletter.

Keep in mind that this Alzheimers cure only works for mice so far. Given the outstanding results in mice, human trials for Alzheimers treatment are proceeding in Southern California and in England. In humans, taking 2000 to 3000 milligrams a day is "totally harmless," says Dr. Williams. The toxic dose would be nearly a pound of niacinamide daily, and there has never been a death reported from niacinamide supplementation.

Where does the positive effect come from?

While the niacinamide didnt have any effect on the most common marker of Alzheimers, beta-amyloid, it did cause a 60 percent decrease in another marker, called "tau protein" one specifically referred to as "Thr231-phospho-tau".

Niacinamide was also associated with an increase in "microtubules," which carry information inside brain cells. "Microtubules are like highways inside cells. What were doing with [niacinamide] is making a wider, more stable highway," one of the researchers said. "In Alzheimers disease, this highway breaks down. We are preventing that from happening."

On the road to healing
Researchers found that most people are able to take 1,000 milligrams of niacinamide three times daily indefinitely with no adverse effects. Nearly everyone reported that their arthritis symptoms started to improve in just three to four weeks. And after three to four months theyd most often disappear completely-and stay away as long as the person kept taking the vitamin. However, if they stopped taking it, the symptoms it had relieved would start to return or worsen just as quickly as they gone away-and come back as bad as ever in within four months.

Occasionally someone would experience nausea taking the full amount of niacinamide. Whenever this occurred, it is recommended that the dose be cut in half, to 500 milligrams three times daily.

According to news reports, clinical trials in humans with Alzheimers are set to begin in 2010 in both England and Southern California. But, again, theres no need for you to wait for the outcome of these clinical trials to try niacinamide for a family member who has Alzheimers already. Its exceptional safety, affordability, and availability make it worth trying right now. And when its Alzheimers, the sooner naicinamide is started, the better the chances are for it to work, before the accumulation of "intracellular garbage" has done irreversible damage. Of course its best to work with a physician skilled and knowledgeable in nutritional and natural medicine, in case you have any questions.

Niacinamide is available in 500 and 1,000 milligram capsules and tablets. It can be found at nearly any natural food store and pharmacy.

Side Effects of Niacinamide

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Niacinamide:

  •          Diarrhea;
  •          dizziness;
  •          headache;
  •          itching; nausea;
  •          stomach upset;
  •          temporary feeling of warmth or flushing of the skin.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Niacinamide:
Severe allergic reactions rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; black, tarry, or bloody stools; changes in vision; dark urine; decreased urination; fast or irregular heartbeat; loss of appetite; muscle pain or weakness; numbness or persistent tingling of the skin; persistent nausea, vomiting, or general "unwell" feeling; severe or prolonged flushing of the skin; stomach pain; swelling of the hands, legs, or feet; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

What happens to balance as we age?

Balance decreases as we age, and importantly, falling is a major problem as a result. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, one of every three Americans over the age of 65 falls each year, and among individuals 65-84, falls account for 87% of all fractures and are the second leading cause of spinal cord and brain injury. The good news is that physical activity can improve balance and reduce the risk of falling. In one study of 256 older adults 70 to 92 years of age, average age 77 who did tai chi for six months, there were 52% fewer falls in the individuals who did tai chi compared to those who didnt, and there were fewer falls overall among the individuals who did tai chi compared to those who didnt 28% versus 46%.

In an even more convincing study called a meta-analysis, where researchers combine the results of many studies on the same subject, it was reported that muscle strengthening and balance retraining exercises in 1,016 older men and women ages 65 to 97 reduced the risk of falls and fall injuries by as much as 35%-45%.

One of the important conclusions of the research is that its important to select balance-training exercises that are specific to activities that you do during the day. For instance, you might want to do balance exercises on one leg that mimic the act of walking if you are unsteady while you walk when you walk, one leg is in the air. Tai chi is excellent for this because it involves slow, coordinated movements, and particularly so since you lift one leg frequently while doing it.

Balance Exercises for Seniors

Balance exercises help build strength in your leg muscles in order to maintain balance and prevent falls. These particular types of exercises help seniors improve balance and stability. Before you begin these balancing exercises make sure you have a table or chair that you can hold on to. Start out by holding onto the table or chair with one hand. As you proceed through the exercises try using just your finger tips to improve balance and stability. As you get comfortable with using just your finger tips, try a few of these exercises for balance without holding on to anything. Make sure that the chair or table is still next to you if you need it for balance.

Take a look on four simple exercises for balance improvement you can start from.

Knee Raise

This one helps build strength in your thighs and hip flexors. Get your chair or table set up where you will be exercising. Follow the steps below to begin improving your balance and stability.
  1. Stand next to the chair with the back of the chair next to your left side.
  2. Place your left hand on the back of the chair. Put your weight on your inside left leg keeping your knee soft and slightly bent.
  3. Focus your eyes on something in front of you. Take a deep breath.
  4. Now as you exhale, bend your right knee and bring it towards your chest. Dont bend your waist or hips as you do this balancing move.
  5. Inhale and hold this knee up for a count of 1 to 3 while holding onto the chair.
  6. While exhaling, return your leg back to the floor.
  7. Repeat this several times and then switch legs.
With a slight variation to this balance exercise you can add some challenge for building strength and improving stability. While your knee is still bent and in the air, move your leg to the side pointing your knee to the side. Return your leg to the front before placing it back on the ground.

Watch the video below to see how to do this exercise for balance with the variation described above. Just click on the play button.

Sit to Stand Exercise

If you have been using a table to hold onto you will need to get a chair for this move. Although sitting and standing doesnt seem to sound like an exercise, this move helps build your leg muscles and improve balance. If your chair has arms you can use these to help with balance but remember to use your leg muscles and not your arms to lift your body.
  1. Start by sitting in the chair. Make sure your buttocks are scooched forward and not all the way to the back of the chair.
  2. Take a deep breath and as you exhale, slowly lift up off the chair using your leg muscles. As you do this, lean your chest forward a bit and hold onto the chair for support.
  3. Stand up straight and take another deep breath.
  4. Making sure the backs of your legs are touching the chair legs, lean over slightly and return to a sitting position as you exhale.
  5. Repeat this several times.
Click on the exercise video below to see this senior balancing exercise demonstrated.

Side Leg Raises

This one helps with the hip flexors and leg strength.
  1. Stand directly behind the chair with your back straight.
  2. Place your feet flat to the floor with feet slightly apart. Hold onto the back of the chair or the table.
  3. Take a deep breath and as you exhale slowly lift your right leg about 6 to 12 inches off the floor to the side. Keep both legs straight and your toes pointed forward.
  4. Inhale and hold this pose for a few seconds. As you exhale return to starting position.
  5. Repeat this several times alternating legs.
Try to challenge yourself by using just your finger tips or letting go of the table or chair. Click on the video below to see this exercise for balance demonstrated.

Hip Extension

This move helps build strength in your lower back, hips and buttocks. You want to make sure your chair or table is no lower than your hips in order to prevent stress on your back.
  1. Stand behind your chair or table with feet flat to the floor and slightly apart. Your feet should be slightly less than shoulder width apart.
  2. Take several steps back away from the chair with your back straight.
  3. Slowly lift one leg straight back keeping the leg and knee straight. Remeber to keep your back straight as you do this move.
  4. Hold the pose for a second and then slowly return your leg to starting position.
  5. Repeat this several times and then switch legs.
Click on the play button below to see this particular balance exercise demonstrated.

Depression Treatment with Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies

About Ayuverda

Ayurveda the science of life is a system of traditional medicine practiced in India for centuries and practiced in other parts of the world as a form of alternative medicine. In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda comprises the words ayus, meaning life and veda, meaning science. Ayurveda traces its origins to the Vedas , the Atharva veda in particularand is connected to spiritualism and mythology. The earliest literature of Ayurveda appeared during the Vedic period in India, the Sushruta Samhita and the Charaka Samhita were influential works on traditional medicine during this era.

Ayurvedic practitioners also claim to have identified a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for curing various ailments and diseases. Ayurveda is considered to be a form of complementary and alternative medicine CAM within the western world, where several of its methodssuch as herbs, massage, and Yoga as exercise or alternative medicineare applied on their own as a form of CAM treatment.

Ayurveda believes in five great elements earth, water, fire, air and space forming the universe, including the human body.  Chyle, Blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow, and semen are believed to be the seven primary constituent elements of the body.  Ayurveda stresses a balance of three substances: wind/spirit/air, phlegm, and bile, each representing divine forces.  According to Ayurvedic beliefs, the doctrine of these three Doshas vata wind/spirit/air, pitta bile and kapha phlegm is important. Any imbalance in these three elements results in a disease. Traditional beliefs hold that humans possess a unique constellation of Doshas. It is believed that building a healthy metabolic system, attaining good digestion, and proper excretion leads to vitality.

Ayurveda also focuses on exercise, yoga, meditation, Pranayam and massage. The concept of Panchakarma is believed to eliminate toxic elements from the body.

Ayuverda and Depression

Depression is a neurological disorder. When a person is too overcome with negative emotions, it becomes difficult to focus on any other issue. The person may become lethargic and lose interest in what is going on around them. Such a state may occur when a person fails in an examination, loses a job, gets jilted by a lover, gets divorced, loses some dear one, etc. Some people are able to get over their emotions quickly. But in some others, depressions may last for several days, weeks or even months.

In Ayurveda, depression is known as Chittavsada. It is caused by the increase in the tamas and rajas of the mind with a vitiation of the kapha dosha. Sometimes, an imbalanced vata may also be responsible for depression.

From the ayurvedic perspective, emotional imbalance is caused by lack of coordination of an individuals senses, emotions and thoughts. The heart and mind are intimately connected, because the heart is the "seat" of consciousness. In the Charaka Samhita, a major ayurvedic text, it is said, hridaye chetana sthanam, which means, "the seat of consciousness is in the heart.

The main cause of emotional imbalance is the lack of ability to process emotions in a timely fashion. Some people are able to process an emotion quickly, which means they are able to let go of it and move on with their lives. For others, the processing or "cooking" of thoughts is slow, so the negative impression remains with them for a very long time and impacts their current thoughts and emotions, resulting in depression.

Dietary Treatments for Depression

For people with depression a heavy food is not advised. The person must not eat to the full capacity. Hot, spicy and pungent tastes must be avoided as these will aggravate the senses further. Fluids and fresh vegetables in salads must become an important part of every meal. The person can have cool sherbets like rose sherbet in the middle of the day, especially in the afternoons and when the evening is beginning. Tea and coffee may be taken occasionally to stimulate the brain.

Most people with depression lose their appetite and desire to eat. For such people, food must not be forced, or it could lead to vomiting. When such a disinterest in food occurs, fruits can be consumed. A diet rich in fruits is beneficial in the treatment of depression.

Fighting Winter Depression with Ayuverda

Winter depression is considered by health experts as one of several Seasonal Affective Disorders, or those disorders that develop as part of the bodys response to changes in season or outer atmosphere. During winter, one experiences shorter days and longer nights. Meanwhile, the weather becomes chilly such that you have to switch to winter clothing or gears that enable your body to stay warm.

As of now, experts are still in search of reasons that would explain why one develops winter depression. However, a few evidences reveal that it could be due to lack of sunlight exposure, although the extent at which this factor cause winter depression to arise still needs to be further examined.

Some of the common symptoms of winter depression include the following:
  • Tendency to overeat.
  • Consumption of too much sweets.
  • Craving for carbohydrate-rich foods.
  • Uncharacteristic weight gain.
According to Ayurveda principles, winter is believed to be the time for Hemanta ritu period between mid-November to mid-January and Sisira ritu period between mid-January to mid-March. Ayurveda has a valid explanation when it comes to the human bodys response to the seasonal changes. Winter depression is one of those conditions. Any changes that take place on your body, physiologically speaking, is due to the increase of Vata or body fire, which aims to compensate for the extremely cold weather on the outside such that you can regulate internal body temperature.

People who have vata as their major constituent in their body are at the highest risk of developing winter depression. Thus, ayurvedic treatments against winter depression recommend reducing vata to combat any effects of this condition to your body.

Since winter depression is believed to be caused by lack of sunlight exposure, then you must try to get as much sunlight as you can. In the absence of sunlight, you must expose yourself to artificial source of lighting such as sitting by the fireplace. This Ayurveda tip is believed to be really effective. Also, you must keep your home well-lit to reduce the depressive symptoms or intensity of the condition.

Engaging in regular but moderate exercise is also ideal for relieving winter depression. One such exercise that would reap effective results is yoga. A more suitable alternative would be to regularly engage in a sexual act, since it not only improves physiological condition but can improve your mood, as well.

Below are additional tips that you can use for Ayurveda treatment against seasonal affective disorders, such as winter depression:
  • Use a vata balancing herbal oil such as abhyanga and massage it all over your body. Concentrate the application of oil and massaging on your head.
  • After massaging with the oil, remove it off your body by taking a warm or hot bath. You can also prepare a homemade herbal scrub to use on your bath, which includes a combination of the following ingredients in equal proportion: yellow and green gram, and fenugreek seeds.
  • You can consume warm soups.
  • Eat foods that are known to balance your vata such as black gram, wheat, oil, and jaggery.
  • Instead of focusing on a single type of food, you can cycle through various tastes from sweet, to salty, to sour.
  • Wear thick sheets or clothing materials such as wool, cotton, or silk.
  • Never forget to protect your feet with the right kind of winter footwear.

Does listening to music improve productivity?

Music and Study Effectiveness

We know that music can alter your mood. Films have been using musical scores for years to create the right mood for a scene. At times you hardly notice the music at all but you are very receptive to the mood being conveyed. So can we use music to put us in a "productive" mood? The issue whether the use of music while studying is good or not is inconclusive despite of so many and researches about the effect of music while people are studying. Perhaps this is because our learning capabilities are varied: some are auditory learners, while others are visual or spatial learners and so, the impacts of music to us are likewise different.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Approximating several recent studies results, for about 20 percent of students, music seems to be annoyance and they do better in a quite home environment. For these students, the music stays in their head and becomes highly distracting. For the remaining 80 percent, the answer seems to be yes, it can be helpful.

Somehow similar overly positive results were obtained at the workplace trial when 75 out of 256 workers at a large retail company were issued with personal stereos to wear at work. Results after four weeks experiment have showed a 10% increase in productivity for the headphone wearers versus non listeners. Other similar research conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois found a 6.3% increase when compared with the no music control group.

How music helps to learn?

Music activates both sides of the brain. It elicits emotional responses, regulates attentional states, and stimulates the limbic system. The limbic system and the subcortial region of the brain are involved in engaging musical and emotional responses. More important, several researches uncovered the role of the brains hippocampus in long-term memory. This means that when information is imbued with music, there is a greater likehood that the brain will encode it into long-term memory.

Ways to listen music

If you are going to listen to music, while study, there are two ways to go. One is to use music that you like such as a local radio station or your favorite CDs. The value in this is simple: Music you like keeps you awake. Keeps your spirits up, and help the time go by faster. If you can perceive this audio background in general, while blocking the words of the composition out of your head you just like the rhythm and beat, that might be a good way to go.

The second method is to use music as background sound. However, because most music is composed to be listened to, the trick is to find music that does not "hook in" your mind and invite you to pay close attention to it. In other words, the best background music is highly predictable. Its music that you know is there and it does some good, but it does not occupy your thoughts.

Which music is best?

If your goal is to increase your concentration then music which has a constant, easy beat and light melodies are recommended. These are said to be good for those trying to study as they help you structure your reading to aid focus and memorizing. Typically, it is nature sounds such as waterfalls, ocean waves, or the rain forest sounds or classic music like Baroque the works of Vivaldi, Bach and Handel or smooth jazz such as George Benson, David Sanborn, or Rick Braun. Get CDs with an orchestra, not one or two instruments. You might create your own custom CD using only music in a major key and a faster pace andante, not adagio or largo.

Rock music can have a similar effect. According to a report in the journal Neuroscience of Behavior and Physiology, the Russian Academy of Sciences discovered that a persons ability to recognize visual images, including letters and numbers, is faster when either rock or classical music is playing in the background.

If you are aiming to be more productive through being more relaxed, then you may be interested to learn that research has shown that music with an upbeat rhythm can reduce stress hormone levels by as much as 41%.

The Mozart effect

Some of the most publicized studies into whether listening to music increases productivity have centered on what has been termed the "Mozart effect". The term got its name after a study showed that college students had performed better solving mathematical problems when listening to classical music.

Remove Fake Antivirus is ? free portable software used to remove the most popular fake antiviruses from your computer.

What is fake antivirus? This is a type of virus/malwares which disguises itself to be an antivirus. It infects your computer when you accidentally click a link in a website which will download the malware into your computer and run automatically when your windows boot. It scans the infected computer and produces fake alert warnings. It convinces you that your computer is in danger and urges you to purchase a useless copy of the fake antivirus. In most cases, the malware program blocks the real antivirus on your PC and Internet access to limit your ability for recovery.

These fake antiviruses must be removed immediately. The software supports removal of the 64 malware utilities, listed below:

So a dating application is great for setting the mood, flirting over the web, and so on, but what do you do tonight? If youre in one of the major US metros, Crazy Blind Date is an application that can put you into a date that evening if you like.

Image

Starting with the basics, where, when, and possible alternate dates, Crazy Blind Date can guide you into a solo, double, or even double blind date. Brought to you by the same team that created okcupid, Crazy Blind Date has a pool of people to draw from and an interesting method.

Image

After youve entered the basics, theyll verify your email and mobile number. When the right person comes up, theyll send a brief profile along with a blurred picture. If both are willing, a meeting is arranged. To avoid mishaps users send a description of what theyre wearing, and if that doesnt work, they open a line of communication through them to help you along.

Image

The downside to the service is that there is very little information available on who you might be meeting, but since it is a blind date, this unique application is perfect for quick rendezvous and empty nights.

2009 Worlds Top Retirement Destinations from International Living

International Living traditionally compiles its Annual Retirement Index, featuring the top International Retirement Destinations.

The United States ranks 22 on the Index and receives particularly bad marks in the area of special benefits for retirees. It scores well in both safety and infrastructure. At the bottom of the list are the United Kingdom and South Africaprimarily because of high real estate prices and, in the U.K., overall high cost of living. In the case of South Africa, the country didnt score particularly well in any category.

No place scores a perfect 100, stresses Sheridan. Even Ecuador, our number one retirement destination, earns a score of only 79. The best, but not perfect. If youre trying to pick a place to retire, keep that in mind. There will be good points and bad, no matter where you go. Realizing that ahead of time will help eliminate disappointments later.

Entertainment, Recreation, and Culture. This category considers the number of newspapers per 1,000 citizens, the number of museums and cinemas per capita, the number of university students, the literacy rate, and the variety of cultural and recreational offerings. Weight: 10%

Cost of Living. This score is based on statistics from the Indexes of Living Costs Abroad, Quarter Allowances, and Hardship Differentials, published by the United States Department of State, and on data published by Business International. We also use our firsthand experiences living and traveling in these countries. The lower the score, the higher the cost of living. Weight: 20%

Safety and Stability. This measure of unrest in each country is based primarily on Interpol data and State Department statistics. It also takes into account the civil liberties and political rights granted by each government. Our own experiences and reports from expatriates living in these countries also influence the safety scores. Weight: 5%

Health Care. Considered in this category are the cost of a typical visit to a general practitioner and the cost and coverage particulars of health insurance. Weight: 20%

Climate. Countries with temperate weather throughout the year, moderate rain fall, and little risk of natural disaster come out on top in this category. We use data representing each country as a whole instead of favoring one region over another. Weight: 5%

Special Benefits. This category considers government provisions that make moving to and living in each country easier and more affordable for foreigners. Taken into account are property rights for foreign residents, property tax rates, duty-free imports on personal belongings, currency controls, employment restrictions, voting rights, and transportation discounts for seniors. Weight: 20%

Infrastructure. This section considers the number of cars and telephones per 1,000 residents, the length of railroad track in usable condition, the number of airports, the quality of the countrys road and highway network, and the availability of telecommunications. Weight: 5%

Note that there are many versions of the Top Retirement Destinations, and International Living is just one of the viewpoints. However, the approach to the index calculation looks reasonable and serious.

USA and Russia: Statistical comparison and its implication for making economic decisions

Comparison between USA and Russia Statistical Table

The comparison table for the geographical, demographic, and economic specifics of the United States of America and Russia were from Wikipedia 2008.

Selective Data Analysis

Geography
Russia is a country of about 1.8 times of the size of the USA, occupying the vast area between Europe and the North Pacific Ocean. It takes over 8 hours by plane to reach from Moscow to Vladivostok on the Pacific coast, and the time difference is 8 hours as well. However, population geographical distribution is far from being homogenous. The highest density of population is occurred in the European part of the country, west from the Ural Mountains, and there are huge almost empty territories in Far East and Siberia. Therefore, while establishing business presence in Russia, it is essential to evaluate all geographic and societal factors to determine the optimal location. For the high tech industries, the most attractive would be placing offices in or near the big urban centers with sufficient amount of the highly educated employees.

Russia has huge supplies of the mineral resources whose total potential value in current world prices is estimated at an about $30 trillion. Russia produces 17 per cent of the worlds crude oil, as well as 25-30 per cent of its natural gas, 6 per cent of all bituminous coal, 17 per cent of commercial iron ore and 10-20 per cent of all non-ferrous, rare and noble metals mined across the globe. For the businesses, targeting oil and gas exploration, the natural presence should be established at as Western and Eastern Siberia and on Sakhalin Island Russian Embassy.

Another point, related to the countrys huge territories, is arranging business transportation needs. While in the European part of the country the network of the roads is overall properly developed, land transportation through the Asian territories might take significant amount of time, which should be taken in an account. In some areas, there are no ground roads at all, and the inbound and outbound transportation should be performed exclusively by air.

Demographics
Demographics comparison shows that the general population amount in Russia is shrinking, with significantly lower birth rate, and higher death rate. Infants mortality is almost double in Russia, comparing to the adequate data in the USA. This can represent a noble business niche, where medical businesses might find its proper application. Developing infants mortality prevention applications, devices, medicines, and approaches will meet government support and understanding, since the decreasing population with rapid growth of the amount of retired people is considered as one of the biggest Russian demographic concerns.

One more distinctive feature is difference in the human sex ratios. In Russia, female to male ratio is much lower, than in the USA, and sharply declining with the age of the group. For the group of the 65 yours old and over, this ratio is lower than 50 per cent. It is mostly caused by deaths of working-age males due to cardiovascular disease. Among others major reasons researches mention cancer, traffic injuries, suicide, alcohol poisoning, and violence EUbusiness, 2008. So, while preparing product distribution channels, female prevailing specific trends should be considered for market evaluation for male-only or female-only products and services.

Economy
While Gross Domestic Product GDP is still relatively low, its growth rates produce very favorable trends. Note, that GDP growth for 2006 was 6.7 per cent, relative to 6.4 per cent in 2005. However, the growth rate strongly depends on the economic sector. Construction was the fastest growing sector of the economy, expanding by 14 per cent in 2006. The main private sector services - wholesale & retail trade, banking & insurance, and transportation & communications - showed strong growth of about 10 per cent. In contrast, public sector services - education, health care, and public administration - lagged behind with only 2 to 4 per cent growth in 2006. EUbusiness, 2008.

Another point of review is Russian labor force. While it is just half of what is available in the USA, the number is mostly correlates to the total amounts of population in these countries. However, the quality of the workforce is different. While Russias educational system has produced nearly 100% literacy, the Russian labor force is undergoing tremendous changes. Although well educated and skilled, it is largely mismatched in many cases to the rapidly changing needs of the Russian and International economies EUbusiness, 2008. In Russia, employees are not so mobile as in the USA, so while establishing business presence with qualified human resources essential needs, the office or factory should be located in the area, where skilled employees are already available.

Symmetrical Triangle Stock Chart Pattern

Introduction

The triangle pattern, also called the coil, appears in three varieties:

1. symmetrical, 2. ascending, and 3. descending.

Generally, a triangle pattern is considered to be a continuation or consolidation pattern. Sometimes, however, the formation marks a reversal of a trend.

Symmetrical triangles are generally considered neutral, ascending triangles are bullish, and descending triangles are bearish. From a time perspective, triangles are usually considered to be intermediate patterns. Usually, it takes longer than a month to form a triangle. Seldom will a triangle last longer than three months. If a triangle pattern does take longer than three months to complete, Murphy advises that the formation will take on major trend significance.

The symmetrical triangle, which can also be referred to as a coil, usually forms during a trend as a continuation pattern. The pattern contains at least two lower highs and two higher lows. When these points are connected, the lines converge as they are extended and the symmetrical triangle takes shape. You could also think of it as a contracting wedge, wide at the beginning and narrowing over time.

What does a symmetrical triangle look like?

Converging trendlines of support and resistance gives the triangle pattern its distinctive shape. This occurs, Kahn explains, because the trading action gets tighter and tighter until the market breaks out with great force. Buyers and sellers find themselves in a period where they are not sure where the market is headed. Their uncertainty is marked by their actions of buying and selling sooner, making the pattern look like an increasingly tight coil moving across the chart.

As the range between the peaks and troughs marking the progression of price narrows, the trendlines meet at the apex, located at the right of the chart. The base of the triangle is the vertical line at the left of the chart which measures the vertical height of the pattern.

Image

A symmetrical triangle shows two converging trendlines, one is ascending, the other is descending - creating a sideways symmetrical triangle. The formation occurs because prices are making both lower highs and higher lows. Elaine Yager, Director of Technical Analysis at Investec Ernst and Company in New York and a member of Recognias Board of Advisors, notes that the pattern should display two highs and two lows, all touching the trendline as - a minimum of four reversal points is necessary to draw the two converging trendlines. The diagram has these points noted.

Bulkowski divides symmetrical triangles into two groups:
1. symmetrical bottoms - prices trend down then form lower highs and higher lows. Breakout can be either downward or upward. 2. symmetrical tops - prices trend up then form lower highs and higher lows. Breakout can be either downward or upward.

Why is the symmetrical triangle pattern important?
A symmetrical triangle pattern is relatively easy to identify. In addition, triangle patterns can be quite reliable to trade with very low failure rates. There is a caution concerning trading these patterns, however. As mentioned previously, a triangle pattern can be either continuation or reversal patterns. Typically, they are continuation patterns. To achieve the reliability for which the triangle is well known, technical analysts advise waiting for a clear breakout of one of the trendlines defining the triangle.

Triangle patterns are usually susceptible to definite and dependable analysis, with the proviso that the investor must wait for a reliable, as opposed to a premature, breakout. Bulkowski advises that, in general, the failure rate for triangles drops significantly if the investor waits for a valid breakout and, once that breakout occurs, the pattern proves strongly reliable.

Murphy advises that a minimum penetration criterion would be a closing price outside the trendline and not just an intraday penetration. Similarly, Schabacker warns of the false moves and shake-outs which most commonly attend the triangle.

Is volume important in a symmetrical triangle pattern?

Volume is an important factor to consider when determining whether a formation is a true triangle. Typically, volume follows a reliable pattern: volume should diminish as the price swings back and forth between an increasingly narrow range of highs and lows. However, when breakout occurs, there should be a noticeable increase in volume. If this volume picture is not clear, investors should be cautious about whether the pattern is a true triangle.

This traditional volume pattern develops because of investor sentiment during the creation of a triangle. Investors are uncertain. This uncertainty means that they are buying and selling sooner, which translates into a narrowing of the highs and lows, creating the coil shape, indicative of the triangle . Because investors are uncertain, many are holding on to their stocks, awaiting the markets next move. When breakout finally does occur, theres a surge in market activity because investors are finally certain enough about the direction of the market to release their pent-up supply or demand.

What are the details that I should pay attention to in a symmetrical triangle pattern?

1. Occurrence of a Breakout - Technical analysts pay close attention to how long the triangle takes to develop to its apex. The general rule, as explained by Murphy, is that prices should break out - clearly penetrate one of the trendlines - somewhere between three-quarters and two-thirds of the horizontal width of the formation.6 The break out, in other words, should occur well before the pattern reaches the apex of the triangle. . Adherence to this rule is strongly advised by Yager, She adds that the closer the breakout occurs to the apex the higher the risk of a false breakout.

To take the measurement, begin by drawing the two converging trendlines. Measure the length of the triangle from its base to the apex. Next, plot the distance along the horizontal width of the pattern where the breakout should take place. If prices remain within the trendlines beyond the three-quarters point of the triangle, technical analysts will approach the triangle with caution. In much the same manner as Yager, Murphy warns that if prices dont breakout of the trendlines before that point, the triangle begins to lose its potency and prices will simply drift out beyond the apex with no surge in either direction.

2. Price Action - Unlike ascending and descending triangles which give advance notice of their intentions, the symmetrical triangle tends to be a neutral pattern. Murphy advises that the symmetrical triangle is generally a consolidation pattern. This means an investor can look to see the direction of the previous trend and make the basic assumption that the trend will continue. However, many experts advise investors that because the breakout direction could go either way that they wait until the breakout occurs before investing in or selling the stock. Schabacker refers to a symmetrical triangle as a picture of hesitation.

3. Measuring the Triangle - To project the minimum short-term price objective of a triangle, an investor must wait until the price has broken through the trendline. When the price breaks through the trendline, the investor then knows whether the pattern is a consolidation or a reversal formation.

To calculate the minimum price objective, calculate the height of the formation at its widest part - the base of the triangle. The height is equal determined by projecting a vertical line from the first point of contact with the trendline on the left of the chart to the next point of contact with the opposite trendline. In other words, measure from the highest high point on one trendline to the lowest low point on the opposite trendline.

Both these points will be located on the far left of the formation. Next, locate the apex of the triangle the point where the trendlines converge. Take the result of the measurement of the height of the triangle and add it to the price marked by the apex of the triangle if an upside breakout occurs and subtract it from the apex price if the triangle experiences a downside breakout.

For example, working with a symmetrical triangle, assume the highest high of the pattern occurs at 100 and the lowest low at 80. The height of the pattern is 20 100 - 80 = 20. The apex of the triangle occurs at 90. The pattern has an upside breakout. Using the measuring rule, the target price is 110 90 + 20 = 110.
4. Duration of the Triangle - As mentioned before, the triangle is a relatively short-term pattern. It may take up to one month to form and it usually forms in less than three months.
5. Forecasting Implications - Once breakout occurs, the symmetrical triangle tends to be a reliable pattern. Bulkowski calculates failure rates ranging between 2% and 6% for symmetrical triangles after a valid breakout.
6. Shape of Symmetrical Triangle - The pattern should display two highs and two lows, all touching the trendline - a minimum of four reversal points is necessary to draw the two converging trendlines.
7. Volume - Investors should see volume decreasing as the pattern progresses toward the apex of the triangle. At breakout, however, there should be a noticeable increase in volume. Like reversal patterns, volume is more important on the upside than the downside. Therefore, an investor will be particularly interested in seeing an increase in volume on breakout if the pattern is moving upwards. Similarly, if prices are experiencing an uptrend, investors should be looking for volume to increase as prices move up and fall as prices fall back.
8. Premature or False Breakouts - Bulkowski calls them premature false breakouts and Schabacker refers to them as false moves or shake-outs. Both agree that triangles are among the patterns most susceptible to this phenomenon. Because the pattern can be either a reversal or continuation pattern, investors are particularly susceptible to false moves or, at the very least, confused by them. In addition, because volume becomes so thin as the triangle formation progresses to the apex, it takes very little activity to bring about an erratic and false movement in price, taking the price outside of the trendlines.

To avoid taking an inadvisable position in a stock, some investors advise waiting a few days to determine whether the breakout is a valid one. Typically, a false move corrects itself within a week or so. A key sign of a possible false move is low volume. If theres no pick up in volume around the breakout, investors should be wary. Typically, a good breakout from a triangle formation will be accompanied by a definite surge in volume.

There are situations, however, where a false move will occur with high volume. According to Schabacker, these are the most dangerous variety of false moves. The only advice experts can give to investors who fall prey to one of these false moves is to reverse their positions as soon as they become aware of the true movement of the stock.

It is also advisable to be increasingly suspicious of triangle patterns where the breakout occurs very close to the apex. Because trading is so thin at this point, there is an increased likelihood that a false move could occur. Also, false moves are more likely with symmetrical triangles, maintains Schabacker.  With the right-angle triangles, the trend is suggested by the pattern itself. Therefore, a deviation from that trend is more likely to raise the suspicion that it may be a false move.

How can I trade this pattern?

Edwards and Magee offer different trading strategies depending on whether you already have a position in the stock or whether you do not have a position in a stock experiencing a triangle formation. If an investor already has a position in a stock, he or she may be locked into that position as the formation takes shape because it is not possible to definitively predict which way the breakout will take the price of the stock. The key is waiting and watching for a valid breakout before making an investment decision.

If an investor does not have a position in a stock, Edwards and Magee advise staying away from the stock when its in the process of forming the triangle pattern. Consider a position when a dependable breakout has occurred. After such a breakout, if on the upside, buy on the next reaction if the Major Trend is up, or if on the downside, sell short on the next rally if the Major Trend is down.

Given contradictory nature of the direction of breakouts from triangles, all experts advise caution with triangles while theyre in the process of forming. . . . it might be better policy to note such formations in the making, and wait until the decisive breakout before making the new commitment. Once a valid breakout has been detected, however, the same experts agree that triangles are a reliable pattern to trade. As mentioned, this pattern has a tendency to premature breakouts and false moves.
To avoid mistaking a false move for a valid breakout, experts advise waiting a few days to see if the breakout is dependable. According to Murphy, a minimum penetration criteria would be a closing price outside the trendline and not just an intraday penetration. Investors do have time once a breakout has occurred.18 According to Bulkowski, when considering symmetrical triangles, an investor will have over five months to reach the ultimate high after an upside breakout and less than half that time after a downside breakout.

Because premature breakouts where prices close outside of the trendline are so common, dont dismiss the pattern if it has experienced such a breakout. According to Bulkowski, however, premature breakouts do not predict the final breakout direction or success or failure of the formation.

Be wary of breakouts from triangles where the breakout does not occur until the apex of the triangle. Experts, including Edwards and Magee, maintain that the most reliable breakouts occur about two-thirds of the way along the triangle.

The triangle pattern should not show too much white space, states Bulkowski. If theres too much white space in the middle portion of the triangles created as price moves from lows to highs, then the pattern may not be a triangle. In a valid triangle, price should bounce back and forth in a fairly regular pattern, as price moves toward the apex.

Bulkowski advises that it is very common for a triangle formation to experience a throwback where prices break upward and then fall back to the formation or a pullback where prices break downward and then rise up again to meet the formation. Throwbacks and pullbacks tend to complete within a couple of weeks and the breakout continues as before.
Converging trendlines of support and resistance gives the triangle pattern its distinctive shape. The Bullish triangle has 2 peeks on the resistance line and 3 waves on the bottom support line.

Example

Image

Conseco CNCEQ formed a rather large symmetrical triangle over a 5-month period before breaking out on the downside.
  1. The stock declined from 50 in Mar-98 to 22 in Oct-98 before beginning to firm and consolidate. The low at 22 probably was an over-reaction, but the long-term trend was down and established for almost a year.
  2. After the first 4 points formed, the lines of the symmetrical triangle were draw. The stock traded within the boundaries for another 2 months to form the last 2 points.
  3. After the gap up from point 3 to point 4, volume slowed over the next few months. There was some increase in volume in late June, but the 60-day SMA remained in a downtrend as the pattern took shape.
  4. The red square marks the ideal breakout time-span from 50% to 75% of the pattern. The breakout occurred a little over 2 weeks later, but proved valid nonetheless. While it is preferable to have an ideal pattern develop, it is also quite rare.
  5. After points 5 and 6 formed, the price action moved to the lower boundary of the pattern. Even at this point, the direction of the breakout was still a guess and its was prudent to wait. The break occurred with an increase in volume and accelerated price decline. Chaikin Money Flow declined past -30% and volume exceeded the 60-day SMA for an extended period.
  6. After the decline from 29 1/2 to 25 1/2, the stock rebounded, but failed to reach potential resistance from the apex. The weakness of the reaction rally foreshadowed the sharpness of the decline that followed.
  7. The widest point on the pattern extended 10 1/2 points. With a break of support at 29 1/2, the measured decline was estimated to around 19. By drawing a trend line parallel to the upper boundary of the pattern, the extension estimates a decline to around 20.
